About HHBM

HHBM History
1995 John Hemphill, director of Volunteer Braille Services (VBS) in Southern Illinois, realizes the need for good sound evangelical literature in braille. With numerous requests to VBS for Christian materials, he considers the idea of a subsidiary organization to VBS devoted entirely to this need.

1996 John moves to Grand Rapids, MI; VBS merges with Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and John volunteers with this organization for two years. At the same time, he continues to do brailling on his own at home under the name of Helping Hands Ministries.

1998 John leaves ABVI and devotes his time to the expansion of the ministry of HHBM. Other interested persons join with him in the effort.

September 1998 The decision is made to begin the process of forming HHBM into a legal entity, with the encouragement of an attorney from John’s church, confident that the ministry and purpose qualifies HHBM for the 501(c)(3) federal tax exempt status for not-for-profit organizations.

May 1999 An organizational meeting for the HHBM Board is held, with six members who are also the team workers.
